A friend of mine just recently had her email hacked by her ex-husband. I heard there is a "back door." How can others get in via this?

A whole range of ways. A keylogger program, going into Temporary Internet Files, recovering files with a recovery tool, answering the 'secret question' if it's too obvious, phishing (using a program that pretends it's your Yahoo to get you to enter and send you password/account details etc), even ringing internet providers with lax security and pretending to be locked out of your account.

There are also programs that can recover stored passwords from your computer.

Just about all these things can operate remotely! So have a firewall and good anti-spyware program and use complicated passwords with numbers and Caps and secret answers! Do not have your e-mail log in automatically from say Yahoo Messenger. And use a triple deletion tool (at minimum) to remove all traces of anything sensitive.

Unless her ex is a computer wizard, it's not likely that he used a "backdoor." He probably was a very good guesser as to what her password was, and he already knew her email address. The first thing she should've done is change her password into something more difficult to hack that has capitol letters, lower case letters and numbers in it. And the crappy part is that she just may have to get a new email address if those things don't help her. Good luck.

He must have known the Administrator's # of the computer's users, including himself ,which his wife never thought to have changed.
