6 or more an hour is not good at your gestation. Make sure you are drinking extra fluids. I had preterm labor with 2 of my 3 pregnancies. Take a warm bath, drink extra water and rest. If they don't taper off in 30 minutes, then you should call your doctor. They don't have to hurt for you to be in pre-term labor.

If you ever do go into the ER with this, they will hook you up to a monitor to see your contractions. If they don't settle down, they will try hydrating you first. That is a very common cause of too many contractions. SO you'll have and IV. They will also check your cervix for any changes. After that if they don't settle down, they will give you a shot in the arm or Tributaline or brethine to stop the contractions. It makes your face feel warm and it makes your heart pound pretty hard for a bit. You may also feel shakey. Most of the time the will keep you until morning then release you. IF your contractions don't stop with the tributaline they will admit you and put you on Magnesium sulfate. This drug will make you feel like hell. You will feel it go up your arm in the IV you will get so hot you think you want to rip your cloths off. You get fidgetty and restless. The first 30 minutes is the worst because they give you a higher dose in a bolus dose. You become extremely sleepy and nauseas. If you are on it long term like I was, your vision will start getting blurry and you won't beable to eat anything. You will sleep most of the day away. I spent 3 seperate one week stays in the hospital with my last pregnancy and it was hell. When I was home, I was on strict bed rest, and had a tributaline pump in my leg simial to the pump that diabetics have. I had to change me needles every 4 days. I also had a home monitoring device that I had to hook up to to check for how many contractions I had in an hour. Not to scare you, but you need to make sure you take care of yourself so that you don't have any of this happen. DOn't over do anything, rest when you are tired, and make sure that you drink a ton of water. I was on bedrest from week 26 on. I carried my son until 36 1/2 weeks and he was a healthy little boy, but it was the most trying and horrible 80 days of my life. Good luck, and listen to your body.

As long as you're over 37 weeks you can have as many as your body feels like having. If they grow in intensity to where you cannot talk through them, or they are on on top of the other, or 3 minutes apart (from the start of one contraction to the start of another) it can be labor.

If you're under 37 weeks and you have more than six strong contractions in an hour, and they dont stop when you lay down for 30 minutes and drink cool water then you need to call your OB and head for the ER.
