You must be talking about the Massachusetts 54th regiment, the first company with all black soldiers (white officers). Under Col. Robert Gould Shaw of Boston, they were slaughtered at Morris Island near Charleston, but proved to both nations that black men could and would fight.
If you've never seen the movie "Glory" you should rent it and watch it with your family!

would be some type of regimental grouping in the military ... I googled and the 54th from the civil war came up ... apparently they played a roll in Potter's Raid ...
