4x² – 36 = 0

4(x² – 9) = 0

4(x - 3)(x + 3) = 0

x - 3 = 0 or x + 3 = 0

x = 3 or -3

Check
x = 3
4(3)² – 36 = 0
4(9) - 36 = 0
36 - 36 = 0

x = -3
4(-3)² – 36 = 0
4(9) - 36 = 0
36 - 36 = 0

4x^2-36=0
4x^2=36
x^2=9
x=sqrt of 9
x is equals to 3 or -3(negative 3)
3*3=9 -3*-3=9
Checking:
4(3)^2-36=0
4(9)-36=0
36-36=0
0=0 true
4(-3)^2-36=0
4(9)-36=0
36-36=0
0=0 true also

4x^2-36=0

4x^2=36 (add both sides by 36 to move the 36)

x^2=9 (divide both sides by 4)

x=3 (square root of nine, ie because thats the opposite of the power of X. You take the square root of both sides. Square root of x^2 is X, Square root of 9 is 3) X=3

Whatever you do to one side you have to do to the other. That would be the sequence.

3 and -3

2007-10-25 11:56:19 · answer #4 · answered by Anonymous · 1 0

you want to make the x be by itself so you would...

plus 36 to each side to cancel out the -36.
problem remaining: 4x^2=36

then you would divided each side by 4 to cancel out the 4 on the left.
problem remaining: x^2=9

now you would see what times itself equals 9.
which is 3.
because 3 times 3 equals 9.

so x=3

(: hope this helps!!

well bring the 36 to the other side...
so you have 4x^2=36
then divide 36 by 4..
x^2=9
then take the square root to get rid of the square..
and x=sqrt9 or x=3!

ok to whoever wrote 1.5, thats wrong. you guys forgot to take the square root of the coefficient, so it should be 2x=6

anyways, solve it out like this:
4x^2-36=0
4x^2=36
x^2=9
x=+/- 9

remember, if you ever take the square root of something the answer will be +/-

This is a sum and difference of squares type solution. So the factors are (2x+6)(2x-6) or x= +/-3.

x = 3
you do the power first, so x^2 multiplied by 4 equals 36
36 divided by 4 equals 9
sq. route of 9 is 3
so x = 3

2007-10-25 11:56:09 · answer #9 · answered by Anonymous · 1 1

x=3
3 squared is 9. 9x4=36.
