That's what Bob Jones of Bob Jones University says. And he has now given the thumbs up for Romney, even though he says that's a cult too.

I guess the right wing fundamentalists will do anything to keep the Democrats out of office.

You gotta love the bigotry of the religious right. Bob Jones is a bigot and there is no other word for him to claim the church of Rome is a cult even though it is the largest Christian denomination. Mormonism is not a cult, Jones says Romney shares many of his values and sees him as a worthy opponent of Clinton. It does show that Republicans just want Clinton out of the white house.

The English word cult comes from the Latin cultus meaning worship.

In one definition, any religion can be considered a cult.

However the most common current definition of cult is a religion or religious sect generally considered to be extremist or false, with its followers often living in an unconventional manner under the guidance of an authoritarian, charismatic leader.

According to the Cult Information Centre, every cult can be defined as a group having all of the following five characteristics:

1. It uses psychological coercion to recruit, indoctrinate and retain its members.

2. It forms an elitist totalitarian society.

3. Its founder leader is self-appointed, dogmatic, messianic, not accountable and has charisma.

4. It believes 'the end justifies the means' in order to solicit funds recruit people.

5. Its wealth does not benefit its members or society.

The Catholic Church does not meet any of the five characteristics

No, the Church is not a cult. I don't know Bob Jones, but his assertions are starting to prove to me that he has a degree in stupidity more than anything else.

All churches are a cult. They all insist that if you don't follow their religion, you're going to hell.

Think about that statement. Let's assume that we know for fact that there is a religious god and one of the thousands of religions out there is correct. We should all expect to burn in hell for eternity just by mere probability, right?

Yes, the Catholic church is a cult!

It is the continuation of the same pattern that was responsible for crucifying Jeshua ben Joseph.

However, the catholic church - the "mystical body of Christ" isn't - and it includes everyone who is sincerely following their highest ideals - no matter what belief system they follow - even those who don't "get" Jeshua .

Ah no. The church that started it all can hardly be a cult. Perhaps Mr. Jones is the one with the cult. I wonder if he is related to Jim Jones of cult fame.
