If you are writing the poetry for him, then obviously it is doing you no good.

If you are writing it for yourself, then you can only continue or give up being who you are.

Most authors I know couldn't stop writing if they wanted too. Many of the most famous such people in history did so long before anyone paid or recognized them, and some continued long after they had been pronounced failures by their peers.

So it goes.

First, your "guy frind" doesn't sound like much of a friend. Friends support and encourage each other to follow their dreams.

And even if he is correct that your poetry "sucks", that is no reason to quit writing poetry.

One, you should do what you enjoy. If it makes you happy, continue doing it not matter what others think.

Two, "practice makes perfect". You will get better as you write. Very few famous artists wrote (or painted or sculpted) a masterpiece the first time. They just kept doing what they enjoyed until their work improved.

Never do something, or stop doing something you love, to suit someone else. Follow your heart and your dreams.
