Might depend on the situation. Sports stories are a little different than the rest of the news. You don't have to explain as much about the sport on background (as opposed to, say, a new bill going through the legislature).
However, after telling the result, you'll have to tell why the game turned out the way it did. That means talking to the participants and getting quotes on the contest.

Make it realistic and interesting, like have a good plot underneath the sports. Bleachers by John Grisham is a great sports story if you need inspiration.

Jus tlike you would write any other story. Catch the reader's attention in the begining, climb up to a breaking point, and then end it with a bang. Just remember that all good storys don't have a happy ending.

Keep it interesting, and include many literature elements, but enough to still stay on sport topic.
