Absorption of amino acids is dependent on creating a sodium gradient.
Transmembrane transport molecules, each specific for one class of amino acids, moves the amino acid into the cell as part of an active transport. Transporters bind amino acids only after binding sodium.
Once the sodium and amino acids are inside they creative an osmotic gradient that drives water absorption.
