When i search around Yahoo Answers, i see people mentioning "CPA" i am wondering what that is. Also, what is the difference between an accountant working for a company, such as the bank, and a public accountant.

A CPA stands for a Certified Public Accountant. The term "public accountant" refers to an accountant working for an accounting firm like PriceWaterhouseCoopers or Ernst & Young. They audit other companies, typically publicly traded companies like Intel, Reebok, etc. They also do taxes amonst other things.

The main difference between an accountant working for a company and a public accountant working for an accounting firm is that a company accountant manages the books of that company... And a public accountant will audit the books of another company.

Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) have to pass a standardized examination and become licensed in their state. We get a license from the state to hang on the wall, much like a dentist or doctor (here in Wisconsin).

"accountant", "public accountant" and "private accountant" are generic terms, usually referring to where a person works. In general, anyone who works in accounting can be called an accountant. However, there are certain things a CPA can do that others aren't licensed for including public accounting and tax.
