From a Jays' fan point-of-view, that was the best trade in the history of our franchise. It was tough to give up McGriff, but in return we got the best second basemen of the decade. Alomar was an absolute stud during his time in Toronto, and he was probably our most valuable player on both offense and defense during those glory years.
Joe Carter provided some power for us, but McGriff is undoubtedly the better of those two players. His OBP was consistently way higher than what Joe did, and he was a relatively smooth fielder. Tony Fernandez did okay after the trade, but I really feel like his best work had already been done by the time the deal was made.
I can't say it was horribly lopsided talent-wise, but I believe the Jays got the better of the deal because it was the biggest thing that pushed them over that hump. Crime Dog continued to put up big numbers, but Alomar was easily the most outstanding player in that group.
