If you don't really have any experience firing it is definitely NOT something you want to experiment with on your own. If the piece is no more than 1.5 inches in any spot (preferred), has no air bubbles or non-ceramic particles in the clay, has not been painted, is "Bone Dry" (if you lick it the clay absorbs the moisture), and is small enough to fit in a kiln (no more than 24 inches high approx)-- than you should probably be okay finding a place to fire it. Colleges are a great place to locate kilns (depending on the time of year however, they can become very busy with students work), but generally they will be happy to tell you a local place that can help you. It shouldn't be too expensive, a half to full kiln load generally will cost from $20-50. If you are interested in learning how the kilns work, they probably will be happy to tell you. It's a process that can take up to week to fully dry. Look up community art classes that offer pottery or ceramics courses, they should have a kiln available-- and maybe sign up for a class as well! Have fun!

There are places that sell or rent molds and sell bisqued ceramics from the mold for people that just want to paint, not form clay. Most of them will fire anything of reasonable size that won't blow up in the kiln (not dry) Look under Ceramics in the yellow pages.
Dallas has a potters guild with its own kilns and several of the community colleges have their own. Look in your town and ask.

good question.. I have been struggling with this too.. so i contacted local universities and colleges and ceramics studios to see if they offered an internship or a paid open studio for community members.. Now I am interning at UC ..It is hard to get started after graduating from art school but you make it work!

You might need to enroll in a ceramics class

The places I go are very particular about what they fire.
They will only fire items for students (they might consider for past students)

Maybe the local High School, or an art centre. I have heard some people make there own using trash cans. Maybe you could find directions for that.

Sometimes if you ask nicely, your local community college will let you use theirs. I've also seen people giving kilns away for free on craigs list twice.
