I dont know... what ever happened to "Leave it up to people to make their own informed decisions" Seems like we live in a place where personal freedom and choice is supposed to be allowed so long as it doesnt harm others.
So what are the possbile problems with someone say perhaps, sitting down to watch a sports event and smoking up? Oh gosh, look at all the people hes harming!
Same with alcohol, im sure restrictions are required, because if you dont have them, then people will be dumb. But seriously, let people live as they want. I can sit around and enjoy eating potato chips until im 300lbs and get a heart attack and thats a hell of a lot worse than smoking up every day. Are they going to put restrictions on food for fat people because it possibly isnt good for them? Who the hell do they think they are tellign people what they can and cant do? Bastards!

The government should legalize it.
They won't because it would mean admitting they have been either mistaken about the dangers or lying about the dangers, they would have to release all lower level users (and possibly dealers if they were only dealing pot and not selling to kids) from incarceration, they wouldn't be able to tax it quite as easily as they can alcohol, etc...
There's probably a hundred more reasons why they won't legalize it. The DEA even haunts medical marijuana growers and dispensaries in states that have legalized medical use. The federal government won't let the person use medical marijuana as a defense or that the state they were living in allows it's use if recommended by a doctor.
Total B.S., but that's how it is. People have been trying unsuccessfully to change the policies for decades. For some reason, the feds are steadfast in their claims and simply refuse to even consider decriminilizing or legalizing it. That doesn't mean we should stop trying.
People who think it's dangerous should really look at the research objectively. The overwhelming majority of research, some of it even sponsored by the government, concludes that marijuana is a comparatively safe substance even when consumed for recreational purposes and that it should be at least decriminalized. The government doesn't talk much about it, but it's there.
I also love it when idiots say that if we legalize it, then there will be more potheads running around, etc... Maybe for a short time you'll see an increase in use, but is it really an increase in use or just more people willing to admit they use it because they no longer fear prosecution? Besides that, these laws have only been on the books since the 1930s. Before that, there probably weren't anymore users than there are now.
I could go on for hours on this subject, but I'll stop now.

I used to be flat out against it, however my views have changed in last few years. I believe that society would probably be better off if pot was legalized. Its less harmful than alcohol, and produces a much nicer, calmer, less violent buzz. Plus, not olny would we save a few billion on law enforcement and prosecution/incareration, but we could tax it and make a few bucks. I myself have never used it, but my friends do, and they dont seem to have any problems related to its use, other than the legal concerns.
Of course, there is room for abuse, but that is true with all drugs, including the legal ones like alcohol and nicotine.

If this is done correctly the government would never have to tax our incomes ever again. The amount of money that is used to go after small time pot dealers ($3 billion)could be used in many other places. The revenues from the tax on marijuana could more than pay for anything else that we needed in this country.
Weed would no longer be considered a gateway drug. It is only a gateway because who has ever met a dealer that only has pot? If your dealer is out of pot most people would settle for something else (acid, shrooms, X).

It should be legalized. It is equally as intoxicating as alcohol, and it is not nearly as detrimental to ones health.
Because of the money generated by it not being legal, it may never happen though.
Besides the billions of dollars in taxes spent on law enforcement against marijuana, and the money spent by otherwise law abiding citizens who have been arrested, recent ''seizure'' laws have local law enforcement drooling over the cars, boats, homes and mountains of cash they can now steal from people.
By the way, I do not smoke marijuana.

Don't legalize it, we'll have even more potheads floating around if they do. However, I think it maybe could be controlled like narcotics. Only by prescription
