California is very mountainous and rich with gems and minerals. They can be found in rivers, caverns, and mountains (providing that you are not on private property) there are many places you can find (pan for) gems. I go to Pennsylvania often and they have places where you can pan got gems and crystals near caverns and rivers. A lot of times if you belong to a Geology club of some sort, they often have trips where you can mine for gems. The club I belong to only costs about 5$/year. so far, I found amethyst, pyrite, quartz, anthracite (type of coal), sodalite, different jaspers, agate, schist, franklinite, and many more. Most that I have found where semiprecious due to my geologic location.

You, however are more seciptable to finding gold and other precious metals and gems. Here is a whole list you can find second link I send you what to be careful of. http://www.consrv.ca.gov/CGS/minerals/Pages/mineral_glossary.aspx

especially going in caves you should not be alone when "treasure hunting" for safty mainly, also if you are part of a team "geological team" it would be easier to find gems.
