We are prepping our kitchen walls for new cabinets that a Lowes installer is installing. I want to make sure that the wall that is showing is sanded and painted but I'm not sure where the back splash will end on the wall and where the wall cabinet will start. I've read that there should be 18" from counter to wall cabinet. Can anyone tell me what the standard counter height is? We will have granite counters w/a back splash. THanks!

# The base cabinet will sit on the floor and come up to a height that is typically about 34 1/2 inches. On top of that goes the counter top, which is a thickness of an inch and a half, and then 18 inches from the top of the counter top, is typically the bottom of the wall cabinet. In this case, 54 inches total.
# Mark off 54 inches, or whatever your own calculation is, and draw a level line.
# Next, tack a piece of 1 X 4 on the wall along that level line. This will provide you with temporary support for the wall cabinets as you put them up. Leave the nail heads slightly extended so they will be easier to pull out when you remove the ledger.

Typically the bottom of a cabinet is 54" off the ground (which is 18" above the countertop). This is fairly standard for most stoves, but if you have a stove with very high BTU then you might need to consult the manual for exact dimensions. The height of the cabinet above the microwave will depend on your ceiling height. For ceilings 96" or higher a 42" or 36" cabinet is standard. For a ceiling that is 84" a 30" cabinet is standard, which makes the cabinet above the microwave 15" high. Every kitchen layout might vary based on the designer.

It does depend on the size of the cabinets (wall), they can be 30, 36, 42, anything really for custom, and especially your ceiling height. If your ceilings are low, less than 8 feet, or you have bulk heads, that will dictate the size you can use because you are right that you want eighteen inches above the counter. Barring any unordinary situation, set the bottom of the wall cabinets at the standard 54 inches.

Typically, 18" between counter top and base of upper cabinets. Some people change this by an inch or two depending on individual height and so on.

54" from floor to the bottom of the top cabinets. Bottom cabinets are 34" high and 24" in depth. Enjoy your new kitchen!

most kitchen cabinets are 34" tall, and the granite is usually 3/4 to 1 1/2 thick, depending on the granite. So go from there. I know because I am in the cabinet business.
