Make a few deliberate mistakes in performing your work
and tell him what you think of him, so you get sacked
Then you can sign on as unemployed on job seekers allowances so don't have to work weekends. He will find somebody less of a workshy layabout and less irresponsible than you obviously are who will happily work hours he wants them to work. So everybody gets what they want

If your boss is making you work weekends, that does not make him arrogant.

Generally, across the US, workers have no right to work "only 40 hours" or "only on weekdays".

An exception to this would be if you and your employer signed an Employment Contract or if there was an Employee Handbook that outlined company policy that could be interpreted as an Employment Contract by a Court of Law.

Another exception would be regulations by the DOT or other federal agency or state agency. Truck drivers cannot be forced to work more than 14 hours in a single 24 hour period.

When you had a job interview for this new job, you should have asked and/or your potential employer should have told you that you were required to work weekends. If it was represented to you that you did not have to work weekends, then you need to politely remind your boss that when you were hired you were told that weekends were not required. If your employer/boss "changes the rules" then you can quit and try to file unemployment based on your work environment.

It depends on what your contracted hours are.

Its worth checking the link below for information on the working time regulations, as your employer can not expect you to work outside of the regulations unless you have chosen to do so.

The link gives more details along with what to do if you're being asked to work outside of the regs. But basically, it states that an employee should not work for more than an average of 48 hours a week over a 17 week period unless they have opted-out of the regs, by signing an opt-out agreement.

You should note though, if this is a new job and you start kicking up a fuss they'll probably find a completely unrelated reason to get rid of you - its not right but its the way it is. Companies don't like trouble makers.

No body can make you do anything if it is not on your written conditions of employment .
If there is a clause in there about weekend working and it was highlighted to you at your interview then it is fair to say you should work some weekends
What sort of pressure is he putting on you to make you work ??
If you have found out since you joined the company that it is not the job you thought it was and it is becoming intolerable to work there , then you should start looking around to see what else is available.
but don't leave till you find another job
Good Luck

What RIGHTS do you think you have?

The suggestion to find another job is all you have unless your boss is violating hostile workplace rules and regulations or other laws.

Making you work weekends is at the discretion of your boss unless you have an employment contract which stipulates you are NOT required to work weekends.

Did you not inquire before hiring on, what the hours and days were? This would be your fault. Not sure what rights you think have been violated. You have the "right" to find another job.

You have the right to quit. If there is some sort of job description or contract that outlines "no weekend work", you can bring that up to him or his supervisor.

You work when you're supposed to, or you quit. They call it work because all the other 4 letter words were taken.

First of all when you started your new job, you should have been told what shift you were going to be working. You should have also been told if you were going to be working on weekends.

At will states, you don't have any rights, they can fire you whenever they please. You can also quit whenever you please.
