This is just another one of my questions before I go ahead and buy a manual car.

One thing I can distinctly recall from driving automatic is the comfort and smoothness. Now don't get me wrong, I really like going fast and accelerating (and this is one of the reasons I am considering a manual), as I am a teenager, but in the morning, just tapping the pedal and getting to school seems very comfortable and a relaxing way to start the day, tapping the pedals and listening to some Chopin.

Once I am good at stick, will it seem like I can effortlessly/comfortably drive in the morning, even after a long night and I am still very tired? Or will I have to muster up my energy and pay close attention? Does it take a lot of energy to operate the clutch/shifter? Please share your experiences and insights, it is greatly appreciated!

The biggest problem with a stick shift is driving in traffic and constantly using the clutch to change speeds. If you have or develop any problems with your knees, it can become a repetative pain. The most common reason for using a stick shift (besides having to use a vehicle that only comes that way) is for fuel economy. I think it is highly unlikely that you will be able to do much of anything faster with a stick shift than with an automatic unless you intend to burn tires by over reving the engine - damaging both tires and engine and possibly the transmission.

I;ve been driving 'stick' as you guys call it for nearly 30 years and have never owned an auto untill recently(Hobby car) It really is a 'no brainer' once you get used to it!
One small point though If you are very tired it wouldn't make a difference if you were driving stick or auto you should still be concentrating on your driving.Go for the stick and get more sleep! Good luck!

After you've got some experience it becomes second nature to want to shift gears in any vehicle. I've often gotten into my automatic and have tried to shift several times after driving the std for a week straight, maybe it's just me and my friends who do this but it seems common. You'll have no problems unless you're a driver who multi tasks which isn't a good idea anyway.

Once you get used to it, you just do it automatically.I don't even think about the fact that i'm having to shift. I wouldnt trade in my manual transmission even if you GAVE me an automatic. But I also live in an area that gets a bit of snow in the winter, and I find that the manual trans helps me negotiate the snow better.

first make sure it has a cup holder built in, or that a window one will work okay. there's nothing worse int the morning than to have your cup of coffee between your legs while trying to clutch and shift and have it spill in your lap.

Driving one in the morning is no different than driving one at night.

Nope you do it automatically once you learn how you don't even think about it. I heard you use more motor skills while doing it so it may help you wake up. just a thought

I dunno....but it sure does make it hard to use a cell phone or eat a cheeseburger.

But that's just my opinion.
