Napoleons motives? How was he defeated? What would you have told him if you were his advisor?

Napoleon invaded Russia in order to further complete his mastery of Europe. As he had virtually defeated all other nation states in Europe, Russia was the only remaining real threat (aside from the United Kingdom).

Once Napoleon invaded Russia a scorched earth strategy was adopted by Marshall Kutuzov of the Russian Imperial Army. This caused Napoleons troops to suffer throughout the famed Russian winter without any supplies to raid due to the scorched earth. Napoleon even captured Moscow but found the city empty of most people and supplies.

If I were his adviser I would probably tell Napoleon to try and form some sort of non-aggression pact with the Russian Empire. As Russia was so vast and potentially powerful and war based on a whim would be a huge mistake.

Zar Alexander had pissed Napoleon because he also wanted to take advantage of the chaos Europe was. And for Napoleon Russia was its only strong enemy in continental Europe so he decided to invade them.

He was defeated because the Russians didn't stay to fight instead they bunrt their towns and went farther north, so when Napoleon entered Moscow after finding no resistance he found the city ablaza so he had no food and had to return. But in the way back the winter stroke and many soldiers died.

If I had been his advisor I would have told him to return to France before and try again in the spring.
