Global warming is a natural cyclical event that evolves over tens of thousands of years. Even though mankind's Industrial Revolution has certainly helped to 'speed up' the cycle, it cannot necessarily be assumed that 'global warming played a part in" the California fires.
There is some evidence to suggest that at least one fire was started by an arsonist. The high winds, dry timber, and warm temperatures certainly were a contributing factor. And, firefighters in previous operations might also have contributed by implementing firefighting techniques that have since been proven to be detrimental. -RKO- 10/25/07

Not one bit. The intensity of the fires is a direct result of insane fire-supression policies of the last 100 years combined with environmentalists that will not allow prescribed burns or the clearing of vegetation to prevent such massive destruction.

Severe droughts are a natural part of southern California's climate and have been for a very long time. By the way, the normal burn cycle for California's "chaparral" country is about once every ten years. And, sure, humans have a lot to answer for in setting the stage for these fires...but not because of global warming.

If you want to see what the chaparral country is supposed to look like, go south of the border to Baja, where the wild country there has been left to nature. It looks very different and is not so nearly overgrown...nor do they get the massive firestorms that California is seeing.

not unless the arsonist(s) were al gore supporters.

Catalino Pineda, 41, was arrested Wednesday, Officer Kate Lopez told CNN. Witnesses told police they saw him lighting a fire on a hillside in the West Hills area of San Fernando -- northwest of Los Angeles -- then walking away, Lopez said.

After the devastating wildfires of 2003, 1993 and 1970, Californians rebuilt and returned to the scorched hills in ever greater numbers. No doubt they will do so again after the wildfires of 2007. But the larger question is, Should they?

No, not especially. Southern California always has extreme weather related issues, mudslides, fires, etc. It's really nothing new.

The issue is that most of that area is really kind of desert, but people wanted to live there, so most of the water gets piped in. That's fine for drinking, but when it gets exceptionally dry, it makes the whole area one big powder keg because it's so dry.

These fires are more extreme than usual, but I would be surprised if global warming played little if any role in it overall.

I am sure Al Gore will connect those dots. My answer has to be NO Way. Cali burns every year. This is nothing new. Actualy it's the other way around. The fire will put allot od ash in the air which will block out the Sun light and reduce the temperatures just a bit, so it is actualy helping out the Global Warming issue if nothing else.

No, these fires have been going on for decades. It is what happens when you get a traditionally dry area without a lot of rain, the Santa Ana winds, and idiots starting fires. Talk about making a mountain out of a mole hill.

1 Pyromaniacs like fire and do nothing against the law with it. Arsonists are the people that set fires.
2 Lighting and a couple of suspected set fires are the blame I heard on the news. How that would be tied to global warming I don't know.

No. They have investigated that the fires were started by an arsonist. Spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, has even said that there is a $70,000 reward posted for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.

I think we are all pretty sure that besides the high winds ..the thing fanning these flames and causing them to spread is caused by environmental groups refusing to get dried brush cleaned up . Anyone should know that stuff is asking to ignite on friction alone ..The trend on the left looks like if George Bush didn't do it - lets blame global warming ...Blame - blame-blame-blah-blah-blah..oh ..you said no stupid answers..Cancel the blah part..
