At a bipartisan Ways and Means caucus last night, Chairman Rangel outlined his long-awaited “Mother of All Tax Hikes” legislation. The basics of the package are simple: This is the largest individual income tax increase in history.

The bill will add a 4% surtax on Americans earning more than $150,000 a year ($200,000 for couples). That is on top of the scheduled expiration of the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts. So, under Democrats’ plan, over the next few years, the individual income top tax rate in the United States will rise from 35% to 44%. By way of comparison, the other 29 Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development countries – basically other developed nations - have an average top marginal tax rate of 35.7%. In fact, only five OECD countries would have higher top marginal tax rates in 2011 than the United States if the Democrats’ bill is enacted.

I consider my husband and myself to be workers. We made just about $75,000 last year. I am sorry, but I just do not feel sorry for folks making over $150,000 a year, $200,000 for couples. Get rid of your fancy cars and their fancy payments, move into a smaller, less impressive house and start to live in the real world.

It always comes down to Bush did this, Bush did that, War bad, bad, bad. Doesn't seem to matter what the question is.
It's my experience that quite a few Republicans are not all that crazy about Mr. Bush either. He's not going to be around all that much longer.
Try to get over your hate for Bush and open your eyes to what is going to happen to this country if you go overboard in the other direction.
Do you really think that a massive tax increase will have no effect on you, even if you don't make big money? I don't make anywhere near the income mentioned in this bill, but come on folks, you know what rolls downhill.

First I would like to say this. If you tax the so called rich (they hire people) they will not hire and will lay off workers.

The democrats have never met a tax they did not like.

As for GW's tax cuts, the Treasury is bringing in more revenue then ever. Amazing how when people have more money THEY spend it. Unlike the dems that seem to know how to spend OUR money.

Well I guess (as the dems say) they have a mandate that the American people want, and that is why they were elected.

On last thought. At least they tell us what their intention is. So maybe now the American people can vote them out or not put hitlery in the White House.

These tax hikes are on the rich, not the American workers. These tax hikes will lessen the burden on the average American taxpayers, and make our taxation much more fair.
Those who have the means should pay more as a percentage. They can afford it.

The democratic tax hikes are bad, but not as ludicrous as the atrociuos Republican deficit. Deferred taxation or elimination of necessary expenditures needed to fix our own infra-structure isn't exactly any more responsible.

I'm not being partisan, just fair. Remember it was a republican, not long ago who said: "read my lips, no new taxes" and then what did he do? He raised taxes.

I'm not a democrat, but at least with them, you know you're getting a socialist ahead of time. With a republican you're most likely getting a wolf in sheep's clothing. The republican party was a wonderful party, but it has alienated a lot of people with this kind of hypocricy.

I just wanted to let you know... and you may already know this... but um, yeah, Democrats ARE American workers... so I don't really think they feel like they need to steal from them. Unless it's possible to steal from yourself. Do you always delve into topics with your mind already made up? That's a wonderful method to enlightenment. I'll try it sometime but first I'll have to rid myself of this pesky open-mindedness. But as we all know we Democrats are really lazy so I'll probably just keep on keepin' on.

Well, since I don't make $150K a year, I don't see a problem with it.
If you make more than that..just put the excess in investments and you won't have to pay much capital gains tax on it. Problem solved.

Simple. They have two goals. First they want to punish those who have the gall to become wealthy, and secondly, they want to take all that money and buy votes with new programs for the poorer and middle class folks.

I agree with slykitty64. For someone who makes WAY less than $150,000 and also WAY less than $75,000, I can't say that I feel sorry for you.

Maybe, the Republicans should stop giving tax cuts to the rich and the greedy. Then we wouldnt have this problem.
