My ex used a credit card i didn't know we had after we were separated. 4 years later i am finding out he is in about $20,000.00 in debt. How can i find out from the info i have from the collection agency, who the debt is with and exactly what he paid for with the credit card? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to contact the collection agency directly so they don't start coming after me.

It is already on my credit report. I work for an attorney and he already sent a letter saying my ex is responsible for it and not me. But, i believe my name is on the card so I am responsible for it. He says he is paying it, but i keep getting calls. Also, i think (obviously) he lied about what all the money was used for. (he claimed medical debt, but he has very good health insurance)

Credit card companies will lie to scare you into paying bad debt. If you never agreed to the card you may not be liable for the debt. There are attorneys who specialize in dealing with credit card companies and this very thing.
Tell the credit card company to show you a signature where you agreed to the owning part of the debt. If they can't produce proof that you are part of the card, then tell them they are harrassing you and you will turn them over to the attorney general of your state.

I used to work for a collection agency. If you can PROVE that the debt was after you divorce then you cannot be held responsible. If the debt was while you were married you are equally responsible. Most creditors will settle the debt or you can both file a bankruptcy. I had the same problem when I divorce my first husband I settled the debts so I could purchase a house. I simply took out a loan a settled the debt for about half of what it was originally. It saved my credit they were very nice and did not put it on my credit because I told them I was trying to purchase a home for myself and my children. Good Luck!

Three major credit bureaus... TransUnion, Experian, and Equifax... Sign up with an online credit check site and they will do a credit check with these three companies and then give you the results.
In those results, you will find the companies that money is owed to. Most of these agencies will assist in contacting credit agencies as well.
Remember, most creidt agencies can be all talk and very little action, but it's best to be pro-active in resolving the issues.

There are agencies out there.. that are non-for-profit. They are usually in the phone book or on-line. They are people who can arrange for one payments and act as a go between you and your creditors. Call them and find out what options are out there for you..
Sounds you like need to contact a lawyer too. Make sure that you are not liable for these debts. Once your legally separated his debts shouldn't be yours..
I hope this helps.

Why not get your credit report? Each of the big 3 (Equifax, Experian and Trans-Union) is required by law to provide yours to you on request once a year. Any debts in collection would be listed there. You can obtain them online at the sources cited below.

If you have the money, you need to go see a lawyer, if you dont have the money, you need to call the company that is trying to collect and tell them the situation, and be sure to also give the contact information to your ex so they can badger him for the money. If it goes to your credit report, you can go online and dispute it and tell them it is a debt from your divorce and it belongs to your ex husband.

If the bill is in your name you need to contact the agency. If it is in his name then he is responsible for it and you need to foward the letters to him. I don't think you can find out the info you want unless you do call them. Even if you do call them I don't think thay are allowed to give out info on some one else. Good Luck!

Call a bankruptcy attorney. You don't need to file a banruptcy but he/she will know what to do.
