A promise is a promise, never make one unless you are going to keep it. And if it looks as if you can not keep it, then do everything in your power, even if it means winding up looking like a fool, KEEP IT. All promise are the worst promise that can be broken if you break them.......none is worst the the next, they are all equal.

One bad deed doesn't make you a bad person. You need to do a lot of bad deeds to become a bad person. People usually try to avoid talking about bad family past to prevent damaging relationships with people who might've been at fault in some way. Your aunt probably had a good reason for asking you not to tell anyone.

A broken promise to a child is top on the list for me because they don't understand these things yet, and it's sad to think that they will even have to learn it!!

I'm teaching my daughter to use that word very sparingly, to emphasize the importance of a true promise.
And from time-to-time, I "test" her by asking, "Do you promise?"
She passed last time I asked...her response was, "But Dad, that's a mighty big word!"

I have to say ANY promise. To me a 'promise' is a sacred vow, so I rarely make them, always keep them, and never lie about them. Something in one's life has to be 'sacred' otherwise how can their ethics be tested?

Any promise. You should only promise things you can deliver. My son's dad always promises him things then never delivers and I see how it hurts him. In my opionion that is unforgiveable!
