The highest mountain above sea level is of course, Mt. Everest in the Himalayan Range, just over 29,000 feet ASL.

One could argue that the tallest mountain from its base is Mauna Kea, which with Mauna Loa is the Big Island of Hawaii. It rises over 33,000 feet from the floor of the Pacific Ocean, but about 20,000 feet of it is below the ocean surface. It is not a member of a range, but part of the Hawaiian Island chain.
