Yes, We were together for 9 years with one kid, and the engagement lasted less than 2 months...
I didn't give my ring back, it actually was given to me on Christmas so it is considered a Christmas gift, which you don't have to return. Now, there are a lot of factors in asking if you should give it back or not, personally I don't think I would have given it back no matter what, but I have heard these are some factors...
1. Who's fault was the break up? Urs - maybe give it back; His - Keep it

2. What is the price? Expensive - Maybe give it back; Extremely Expensive - pawn it!

3. What will you do with a ring that has so much meaning to something that is a very bad experience in the end if it didn't work?

Yes. Actually, the weirdo tried to give his ring (he bought a matching set) to me because he thought "I expected him to." I gave him both rings back. I suppose it would not have been inappropriate to keep the ring, but I did not want to be reminded of such an unpleasant time in my life, and I never really liked the ring that much in the first place.

I have, but I didn't intend it to be a permanent thing, so I kept the ring. It became a permanent break up when he stole and pawned the ring though....

And I kept the promise ring I was given years ago by another guy (the diamond was actually bigger than my engagement ring). I figured I deserved to keep it after all the verbal, mental and physical abuse he put me through.

He can at least get his money back for it! Hello! 3 month's salary!!! Besides, how could a single person walk around with an engagement ring on and not feel that way? Accepting the ring is saying "I will."

I tried to give it back but he wouldn't take it. I sold it. We split because he got someone else pregnant so & deserved to keep the ring

no I ever been engaged
and I think its not right at all to keep the ring if that happends in a relationship because its not right to keep something thats not yours anymore.

Yes, I have.

Any decent woman gives the ring back. Only a tramp keeps it.

If you keep it, he's lucky that it only cost him that much to get rid of you.
