manipulative is a word with bad connotation. in and of itself manipulation is not good or bad it just is.
your motive behind wanting other to change their opinion, behavior etc is what can be good or bad.
adverstisers are master manipulators. teachers manipulate. customers service reps manipulate pissy customers into calming down. mothers manipulate children into eating vegetables and coming home by curfew.

No, I don't think so....manipulative people are generally out for themselves, it isn't about a give and take between two people, manipulators are about take and take, although sometimes they talk themselves into thinking they are "giving", by substituting thier judgement for someone else's, and telling themselves it's for the other person's good, which it may be, or it may not be. Even if it seems it would be better for the other person's good, the other is still entitled to his own free will. Sometimes what they get out of it is material goods, or some better bargaining position in a situation, other times they just get a rush out of thinking they can make someone do what they want, but that is still about what they want, not what the other person needs or wants. In the end, if someone finds out you are out to manipulate them, then they stop trusting you. We all influence each other, in a give and take between us, in sharing our thoughts and asking opinions of people we respect, etc, but that is not the same thing as trying to "make" someone do what you want, people voluntarily influence or accept influence all the time, but manipulators do thier thing on an involuntary basis, without the other's consent, and without respect for the other person's free will.......

Gentle manipulation is an everyday occurrence right inside our homes. Mothers do it all the time to get the desired results/actions from the little ones. It is how you view it and under what circumstances it is applied that makes it good or bad... It is not always bad. Sometimes when a person close to your heart is turning negative you have to use any which means, to bring him/her to senses, persuasion or even manipulations.

As a general rule, I would say no..however there are situations where it can be a good thing. For example, say you're learning a new skill (or perhaps even trying to get fit). The person teaching or leading you to the successful completion of that goal may have to manipulate you to encourage you/allow you to solve the problem without doing it for you. For adult education, facilitating can be better for the transfer of knowledge and leads to retention. (I've stated this very generally to illustrate the point).

No it cant. There is no positive aspect to being manipulative. Usually when you hear someone say that someone is being manipulative, its usually in a bad context.

Well if you were in a really bad situation like with someone who could hurt you/kill you it would definitely help to know how to manipulate them so that you can get out of there in one piece.

i cannot remember everything ANYBODY has ever said to me, so i cannot possibly answer accurately. however, the following is a completely TRUE story. you've gotta read this nearly unbelievable account. a christian once said to me he runs a completely honest used car dealership because he is a christian, and then he sold me a car with a warranty that he said covered 50% of the cost of any repairs that might need done to this perfectly running machine, within 90 days. the car barely made it a week. his labor and parts cost turned out to be double the actual, and he "paid" his 50%. yeah, 50% of a doubled bill. but then the car got the same problem again. this went on for a while until i was drained of money and had none to make my payments to him in accordance with the "buy here pay here" plan. he repo-ed the car and resold it as is and did the whole thing again to the next sucker. how do i know all the facts? i later got a job working for the guy, detailing his cars. his mechanics told me the whole story. he did it with all customers. and how do i know he was actually a christian? stay with me here because the proof is at hand. one time a man who i never saw before waltzed into the detail shop to use the bathroom, which was two feet from where i was working. he was in there for a long time. then he bolted out of the place without a word. the bathroom door had only been open for a second, but OMG did the outrageous smell of fresh shite hit me like a freight train. i kept working thinking it would go away. but NO. 15 min passed and I opened the door to let it air out. i had to slam it shut because the onslaught quickly pervaded the entire shop. keep reading. it gets better yet, and the proof i promised is coming. 45 min later i went in to check things out. i had to whiz anyway. the awful stench was still the same! turns out this guy had shite his pants before coming in, with the most terrible fecal magma explosion i have ever in my 53 yrs heard of, seen, done, or imagined. his underwear were in the open trash can, covered with the slag. he had brought in paper towels and wiped his god awful, horror stricken @$$, and put them all in the trash can. the mess was partly on the floor too. the sides of the trash can were coated with it, too. i ended up having to clean the whole thing up. the trash can could not be saved. no amount of prayer or other cosmic beseeching could help it. it went in the dumpster. to hell with it. POINT IS, and here's the PROOF, this man it turns out was my boss's MINISTER, at the local church of god or whatever, where the local "christian" magistrate judge also attends and is my boss's friend who lets him off on all the law suits brought against him for his business scams, which included replacing dashboards with ones that have lower odometer readings!!!!! yes it was his minister. my boss boasted about donating over $30,000 / yr to the church, and that he was THAT GOOD of a christian. but he could not pay us more than min wage, and threatened us wkly that we would lose our jobs if we did not get more work done than last week and less than we would do next week, because he was broke, what with him being down to $5,000,000 in investments. outrageous. yes, he was a christian. certainly not a very good one. and his minister exhibited cleanliness that is next to godlessness. i would say that the minister was as full of shite as his two church members, i..e. my boss and the judge. and what about that lie by omission? the shite minister could have said "i'm sorry boys, i need to clean up something embarrassing in your bathroom. do you have any cleaning supplies?" but NO, he had to ruin our day with his volcanic bowel barf and his deliberate omission of any mention of it. this is a true story! as i just edited a spelling mistake i see that somebody already gave a thumbs down rating. why? it is a true story and answers the question. it happened within a mile of where i live in PA. i no longer work there but a neighbor of mine still does. nobody has to like the facts in the story. I DON'T EITHER. it's the actions of the people in the story that deserve the thumb down! actually i think the whole thing is hilarious, looking back, you know? TQRP
