okay so i read a story in english class today.
this is basically what it is:
to a young balck girl the word ******* means something different when said by a white person in school than one of her friends or family.
i think that is such crap.
if you are going around and your friends and fam are saying it..and you dont have a problem then whats the big deal with someone else saying it. look at all the rap songs that have the word niggger in it. shouldnt you get mad about that too? i mean they arent your friends or your family.
what do you guys think?

I totally agree. If you're gonna go around calling yourself something and letting people of your own race call you that, too, then you have no right to be offended if people of other ethnicities use the same term.

one heated debate that will never seem to die.
We all know the history of the word unless you live under a rock. Now with me I never use it in public so that cuts down on the ones that may be confused into thinking it's cool to say it (mainly talking about whites). I have personally taken a new spin on the word. As you know the real definition is a "stupid person " etc. Me personally use the word against it's orginal meaning. I feel that some blacks have embrassed the word and took the negative conotation out of it. But me I don't feel that whites get it sometimes. I mean coming from a white person can be viewed as going back down memory lane for some blacks.
Besides why else would a white or other non-black person use the word when describing someone of African decsent?
It's easy to say BAN the word but that will never happen as long as racism exsists in the world.
Good Question

Yes, that is a boat load of crap and I never bought in that explanation. Also I look up the word and it clearly stated it the most offensive and inflammatory racial slur in Enlish. And it only refer to a black person, a member of any dark-skinned race, and to label as socially disadvantaged class of persons. I can't see why any family member want to called their childern such name. And for friends, what kind of friend would call you this name. Yes, I find it hard to listen or watch rap video's used this words and other words to degrade a woman. And even when a woman call another woman these kind of names.
Its wrong no matter who used that word, friends, family members, either someone from another race. Any and everyone who used that word should clean up their act.

not all blk ppl say the word ****** and the majority say ****a like as a friend and in a completey different way. But if no one has noticed the word ****** has nothing to do with a blk person! I think that ppl are used to using it so ppl take it as disrespect. i think the word gets miscontrued so it shouldnt be used at all. Oh and adding that that's a recent pic and ur not single...u sound really shallow u need to get over it

well being a black person i feel very strongly about the word. Yes i use it with my friends but NEVER with my family... when i'm with my friend the word "*****" is more like the word "man" "dog" or something along those lines. but when it come from some else in this case a white person it just makes me mad b/c i think of bad things that have happened to my parent and grandparents. i know its very hypocritical but thats the way it is. and when it comes to rappers they are not using the word in a form of disrespect to black people.
p.s. i'm only speaking for myself not for my race, cuz thats all i can do

Ultimately, it is an issue of intent.
That is, the assumption is that when a black person says it, they are not intending foul, but when a white person says it they are. Of course assumptions are dangerous.
Swears, more than other types of words in the language, are extremely contextually dependent. Rather than trying to make rules based on context (which would be very complex) it is easier to just outright ban the word.
Banned words are, by their very nature, handy when you are trying to push society.

i be conscious of many will disagree with me, yet i do no longer think that the "N" be conscious had a unfavorable connotation in the South in the initiating. It became the be conscious used to communicate with African individuals or Blacks. It meant not greater or a minimum of the be conscious "White". My great Grandparents and Grandparents had no bitterness or hatred in direction of the human beings they call to them with that be conscious. It took on a meaning of its own as society began to alter. It became the rallying be conscious that help deliver with regards to the lots mandatory replace in our society. simply by fact the be conscious immediately is seen in an exceptionally derogatory mild i've got confidence we'd desire to continuously be respectful of others and not use it. remember as a manner to get to the place we are immediately and we nevertheless have a protracted thank you to flow we went by using many words "N", coloured, Black, Black individuals, African individuals, etc.

If they arent ok with it then why force it on them? Your rationale seems perfectly fair to me but i feel that, thats besides the point. If they dont feel comfortable about it, then dont. There are other similar situations i've come across amongst other races. I do not question them neither do i force it on them. They all have names for a reason. Refer to them by their names and everyone's happy. Easy as that. Nothing complicated.

i happen to think your almost right, however it brings up connotations of slavery and countless years of civil rights abuses when said by white people, it is not made easier by the majority of poorer people in america being from afro carribean backgrounds.
It is much the same as making jew jokes, or muslim jokes, (in UK anyway). I couldnt make a jew joke, it would be against the law but a jewish comic can make self defamatory jokes and its funny.

Its like black folks calling white folks crackers or Casper. Must be passed on from generation to generation. Words like these should not be used, but alot of ignorance is still born. As for Rap.. it just plain sucks.

Even though it is more freely used in society today it is a racial slur. I know where your coming from, but it isn't a word to use carelessly. Black people can use it as a term of endearment to one another, how the reasons should be clear to you why it isn't ok for white people to use it.
