It's a scam. Here's how it works:

There are a lot of different phone companies and they get lots of incoming calls. They have neither the time, energy, or motivation to check if every ID coming into their network is actually coming from the number that the call says it is originating from.

Though it's easy enough to call someone anonymously and provide NO number, there are many people who have set their phones to automatically reject all incoming anonymous calls.

Therefore people like telemarketers who want to keep their identity hidden but still get through to you have to cheat the system. And because they've made it harder for you to tell who they are, they've also made it harder for you to find and stop them.

There are some legitimate numbers that are very similar to 000-000-0000. But none with that specific number.

See link below (last message) for evidence.

There was a period of 6 - 8 months I regularly received these calls. Luckily I never was home and there was no message left. So, I did not bother one way or the other. I assumed it was telemarketing or contribution pledge.
However, I have gone through other scam calls though. One was asking for husband(like you were asked) for very important business discussion. When I said he is not home (single women beware), the caller insisted on getting work address, work phone number etc. I hung up saying "Call when he is home. With important business deal in works, you must be working from the same office".
There are many nutty ways the caller tries to get personal information. Just be careful how you answer what, including your own name, your work information address/ phone/ speciality.

That callerid was programmed into the in-house PBX of the caller. Often telemarketers will do this to disguise or spoof, their phone number.

Well it might have been a glitch in your phone or something. Like with the caller ID
