However, because Hollywood studios have seen a potential market in indie films, for the first time in film history "independent studios" (if you see the oxymoron there you get my point) have sprung up. Now so-called indie films have million-dollar budgets.

Indie is short for 'Independent.' One definition is for the music business: the bands that are Indie are not signed up with a large and famous record label. Sometimes they cut their own stuff and sell it at concerts, and sometimes they use smaller production companies.

Other areas where Indies may appear: fashion, book sales, art galleries. . .
