"indie" stands for independent and it is generally used in connection with film making. From "toptensources.com":
Indie Film
The definition of indie these days has certainly shifted from its origins. Indie should be a shortening of "independent" which means a film produced independent of the big-budget, big-name Hollywood scene. "Indie" is synonymous with "edgy" because, in theory, indie films are free of the constraints of studios motivated by capital gain.

"Indie" is synonymous with "edgy" because, in theory, indie films are free of the constraints of studios motivated by capital gain. As Eric Cartmen of Southpark puts it, "indie movies are all about gay cowboys eating pudding!" However, because Hollywood studios have seen a potential market in indie films, for the first time in film history "independent studios" (if you see the oxymoron there you get my point) have sprung up. Now so-called indie films have million-dollar budgets.

Indie is short for 'Independent.' One definition is for the music business: the bands that are Indie are not signed up with a large and famous record label. Sometimes they cut their own stuff and sell it at concerts, and sometimes they use smaller production companies.
Other areas where Indies may appear: fashion, book sales, art galleries. . .
