I don't even understand why the American people are using other countries as an excuse as to why universal health care is bad. Because there are a lot more negatives with the American system than there are in the other countries.
Have these people even personally talked to a citizen that gets social health care? Or do they hear and repeat the same old myths of 'the government won't let you smoke' or 'the government will choose your doctor for you' or 'you'll die before you even get in the hospital from long waiting lists'.
Funny, all those sound more like the terms an insurance company places on an American.
You will never hear people that have universal health care complaining on the level that Americans do. But of course, no one mentions that little fact.

The U.S. would probably have one of the worst Universal Health Care systems in the world for the following reasons.
First, the U.S. literally just throws money at problems with no accountability. I remember reading about places where a mile of road cost $3 million just to resurface.
Ever been to the DMV to get a drivers license? You want to have numbskulls like those people administering your health care?
Gotta love our educational system, don't you? The U.S. spends way, way more per child on education than any other country, and test scores are abysmal.
Think of the imfamous abuses by the IRS?
How about the legendary incompetence and abuses in Medicare?
Face it, the larger a government program get, the worse the service.
Also, Americans are the fattest people on the planet. Shortly after Universal Health Care, everyone will be demanding expensive treatment to combat their "obesity disease".
Americans also take way more prescription drugs than any other country.... way more. Imagine how this will escalate even further as people demand all their "free medicine".
Lastly, each party will have a vested interest in not having the program work well. Democrats will want huge failures in the system so they can demand higher taxes for an even bigger bureaucray, and Republicans will want to use the defects to dismantle the whole nightmarish system.
Universal Health Care would be a disaster in the U.S. Trust me. I live in Europe now, and anyone who can afford decent care just bypasses the "free" doctors.

I have been wondering the exact same thing. We are the most productive country on the planet. Will that change? I don't think so. When I worked in healthcare, we were frustrated with dealing with insurance companies and the ever changing policies. It frustrated us and the patients. It prevented timely care. But the rich were always taken care of and threw fits if they were in any way inconvenienced.
Our values will prevent it. Give more rewards to the hardworking people that get almost nothing now because of our current system.

Do we want the government to run healthcare like they run education???????? Not me ! When you give the government control of your healthcare you are giving them the final say on all decissions.
Government healthcare = poor quality and more expensive. Remember.....government healthcare will NOT be free

I recently returned from a trip overseas, i spent 3 days in London and the biggest news story was that people were pulling their own teeth because they could not get a dentist to accept the NHS care. Hmmm, sure sounds like a good plan to me.

Citizens in other countries are not trying to get rid of universal healthcare, and every other industrialized country has it. The horror stories are perpetuated by the AMA.
50 million Americans without healthcare.

Exactly. What's also interesting is things that they point out as negative, such as long waiting periods for surgeries and for doctors are all ready very present in the US system.
Edit: To all the people talking about the Brits pulling their own teeth, the current proposals don't cover dental health at all, so that point is moot.

I would buy into that it you could point to just one government agency or program with is not totally incompetent. IRS, Postal Service, Medicare, EPA, Disease Control, jobs programs, farm programs, OSHA, or??? Please name just one that works and win a prize.
