What is a good adult anime that deals with death, loss, betrayal, hopeless, and borders ethical limits?

Ive been looking for a good anime that deals with the loss of a will to live, unhappy endings, and complex psychological trauma and situations. Somethings that borders what the majority of the world would define as right and wrong. It doesnt matter how old it is. Though i would like good animation, the message is mostily what im looking for. Something twisted, Maniacal, and Demented. It doesnt nessessaritly have to be limited to anime. Movies and tv shows work too.

PS: It doesnt have to fit all the critera, just generally something that would fall within these guidelines. Elfen Lied and Ergo Proxy are excellent suggestions. I hope to hear more!

The classic Neon Genesis Evangelion is like that. It doesn't have sex in it, but it's adult in terms of the themes and interactions.

The main character, Shinji, starts out with no will to live, and gets worse. Every time things start to look up for him, they get worse. It starts out with the death of half the human race and goes on from there, dealing seriously with the situation!

I don't want to spoil things for you, but it has all the things you ask for. Read the manga at onemanga.com, and you can find episodes on yahoo video.

I envy you, if you're about to discover it for the first time!

One anime I've seen - Elfen Lied might fit some of those criteria. There is death, unhappiness and violence & such. It isn't very "deep" but the deepest it goes isn't fit for kiddies.
