Do you see the starship Enterprise in our atmosphere?

Well, do you?

No, you don't, because the Captain had said "Beam me up, Scotty, there's no intelligent life here!"

We don't recognize intelligence in the birds that form tools and keep them for future use. We can't acknowledge the intelligence of the Primates, Apes, Chimpanzees, that actually express themselves in play, invention, tool use and re-use!

We don't even acknowledge Dolphins and Whales using advanced planning, long range communications, as being intelligent!

All of our scientists can't really be this stupid! No, the answer is that they aren't intelligent life forms!

So, how will we recognize an intelligent lifeform on another planet? No, I think we are not an intelligent life form that is ready to meet and greet other intelligent life forms!

The basic principle in my mind is any being that possesses the ability to know when to eat, sleep, drink, clean itself ect. is intelligent. The basic skills of life. Everything in this world could be considered intelligent life. All beings do what they need to do with what they are equipped with. We all are designed to perform differently to keep the balance in the ecosystems in which we live. I believe we all love, we all feel pain, we all work, we all learn, we all build. Just some of us are higher on the food chain.

I still believe it will be beagles. The highest form of
peoples corrupt, disgruntled, uncivil behaviorism is in the
mix for what would approach and not land here to remain
jeopardized in a lower intelligence of resourcing. Only dogs love to do what the voices tell them. Android bugs,
pigeons, hungry citizens of promissaries therefore klingons,
maybe some saturnians, or craniacs. In terms of what
space programs want to find, I believe it will be hindus
with bug heads that are really high IQ yet morphed into
weather and political droids eating spinach waffles.

Intelligent life should be evidently self-aware. In addition, if we can recognize it as 'life' in the first place, we should be able to exchange some information with it if it's intelligent. Maybe communication between alien life forms is impossible, but an intelligent life form should be able to ATTEMPT to communicate, at least.

I have a feeling though that any extraterrestrial life we encounter will go unnoticed or unrealized as life.

For the answer I would look at what separates humans from other forms of life on our planet:
Language, abstract thinking, metaphor, art, planning, and creation and use of technology among other things. Some combination of at least most of these attributes would be useful for defining intelligent life.

Will intelligent life recognize us? There hasn't yet been a definition of what intelligent life is. In primates it usually is about self awareness. Most animals cannot recognize themselves in a mirror. Only chimpanzees, dolphins, and us. I think when they use that term they are being egotistical and thinking "as intelligent as us".

i would think at least as intelligent as the majority of humans, that is the bar we have set. I think it is a given that most assume there is some life out there, just not as smart as us.
