I have a friend named Danni, she's 15 years old and weighs 90lbs and she still says she's fat! I dont really think it's healthy for a 15 year old (who is 5'9 feet tall) to weigh as little as she does :( Do you think she's anorexic or do you think I'm just blowing things out of Proportion? And how should I talk to her about it?

Hi there-

Her weight doesn't sound very healthy for someone her age and height, but a persons weight depends a lot on their bone structure, muscle, etc. My sister is anorexic, and to this day is still battling the disease. However, it wasn't noticeable until she was 18, and she was considered as an adult so she would lie to the doctors, and say everything was fine, that she ate all the time...

You cannot determine if someone is anorexic unless 1. you never see them eating (& keep in mind some ppl just don't feel comfortable eating in front of others) 2. they try to have everyone around them (friends, family etc.) eat fattening foods a lot 3. They constantly talk about how disgusted with themselves they think they are (& again this can vary because I do know many females that will say they think they are fat only to receive compliments). There are other signs that can help you that you can find online @

From seeing my sister go through this, it only pissed her off when people would confront her about this issue... However, if you are seriously concerned you need to talk to her parents as soon as possible. They will be able to handle the situation better than anyone.

I wish you the best of luck, I hope this helped a little..

Yes, it sounds like she is anorexic, but I doubt that there is anything that you can do personally. Do you ever talk to her mother? Can you mention it to a school nurse or counselor? People who "rat out" an anorexic have the persons best interest at heart, but be prepared for her to be really angry with you if you tell someone about her. Have you seen her force herself to throw up? Do you ever see her eat anything healthy? You should try to help but talking will not do any good. This is a self-esteem problem, and usually takes professional help to get over.

She could just be insecure. In which case you should tell her she has nothing to worry about. But watch her. Is she constantly exercising? Does she never eat? Does she get tired easily? These are all signs of anorexia. Also, if you try and say something and she becomes overly defensive about it, that's something to worry about. If you're truly worried, talk to her parents or a school counselor. This isn't betraying your friend. It would be betraying her not to help her.

Well, Danni may be a little depressed. Yes, I'm being serious. She is having a nervous breakdown (for real). People think their too fat but they think if they stop eating it'll be allll better. Make sure you get her help. Tell your mom, dad, school counseler, teacher. Anyone you can tell, tell them before she is close to dying.

She might be,
but don't confront her in a upfront way,
she'll feel threatened.
Just be like Danni your weight is unhealthy and I'm afraid your going to get sick, have you've been eating properly.

Say it when the two of you are alone.

Tell her she isn't fat but she's too skinny.

Yes, she might be anorexic and trying to keep it hidden from everyone. If she's always asking people if they think she's fat, then she is obsessed about her weight. Not a good sign.

A person who was 5'9 weighing 90lbs has a BMI of 13.3. 18.5 is considered UNDERWEIGHT and under 18 is considered anorexic.
I HIGHLY doubt she is this tall or weighs this little. (Troll question, perhaps?)
Nevertheless, I could be wrong.
Consider what her eating habits are like.

Shes not too light for her age, but if she thinks she's fat, then I'd say she has a problem.

Talk to her, ask her why she doesn't eat alot, say that people care for her. Hope this helps.
