i want to audition for a show that says "equity showcase approval pending." what in the world does that mean?

I believe it means the production is applying for Equity Showcase status with the union. There are a lot of rules for the production to follow. If you are not union I'm fairly certain you can still participate but you may or may not get paid while union actors will bet a certain amount stipulated to in the agreement with AE. It still may not be much, but you will get the credit :-)
