From a realistic view, before "love" develops, it starts with attraction then liking such person, followed by a period of mutual exchange, during that period I would carefully observe the signs and maintain open communication with the other, in order to determine if we are going in the same direction, mentally and emotionally, if we're not, I'd cut the reins before being dragged into something that might come up empty, as you said.
It's much easier to stop oneself from insisting where one is not wanted while it's in the beginning stages, then allowing it to advance to a level where one is attached and feelings may get hurt.
