I'm from England so we don't have them here, but someone told me if you get sprayed it can take weeks to get rid of the smell. Is this true?

Yes. Dogs will go totally apesh*t if squirted by them, and my grandmother and dad have both told me that the smell is so bad, it'll make you want to pass out, or vomit. The smell does last for a really long time. Not as strong but still there, and still nasty.

I've seen skunks but luckily never been sprayed by one.

It is true, that once it is on you (or your dog...believe me, I know), it takes forever to get rid of the smell. Even with all the suggested remedies, like using tomato sauce.

Actually, I don't find the smell all that offensive. I wouldn't want to be sprayed and have it on me for any length of time, but just smelling one that's dead on the road or something isn't really that bad.

A lot worse, got sprayed in the face if it were not for wearing glasses think it might have blinded me. A close up spray job like that smells like burnt rubber, nearly impossible to get off.

It's not a bad odor it's a Very Strong, animal MUSK scent. It's unbearable. Not like fecal matter or rotten dead animal or rotten food.

Yes the smell can linger on for a while. There are cases of people hitting them with their cars and hit that musk pouch and the scent gets in the vents, eventually in the car and one has to get the car professionally cleaned to get rid of the odor.

It is a very foul smell! My dog has been sprayed a few times, and even after several baths the smell comes back when she gets wet, she also rubbed her face on my carpet before we could stop her (when she was sprayed in the face), and we had to get the capets professionally cleaned! It is very nasty and if you never have to smell it you can consider yourself lucky!

i'v never met a skunk but i have kept ferrets for 11 years and they dont smell as bad as their reputation suggests.
they do stink when they spray, but they only do it out of fear, and the smell goes away in a few hours.
cats stink when they spray too...

The smell is like burning rubber and very strong. I've never been doused myself, but I did hit one on the road in Idaho,USA, with all my windows rolled up, and the car was filled instantly with the stench. How the stink got inside a fast moving car with the windows up, I don't know. Wouldn't know how to get the smell off...
