A great book envelops you into its pages and is written in such a way as to be sophisticated but yet easy to read. It must also be as smooth as poetry from transition to transition, even if skipping from one age to another. Good books aren't necessarily filled with facts, dates, and numbers. The words of a wonderfully written novel while you are reading it aren't words at all, instead they are pictures. They are automatically visualized and taken with you where ever you go. When reading something worthy your mind should be driven to think of it and read more. A great book creates yearning and develops a taste for literature in its many forms. Some wonderful books do start off slow, so you must be persistent.
Some great books:
Lord of The Flies
Where The Red Fern Grows
Lord of The Rings (starts off slow but is AMAZING)
Siddhartha
Dune
The WORST book I've ever read:
Around The World In Eighty Days

Another question you have to ask as well, is what do you do to make it great? Whenever I read I try to make it the right mood. For example when I read Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment I try to make it on a cloudy day with Verdi's Otello opera playing in the background. Or when I read Dante's Inferno I play Rachmaninoff's Isle of the Dead.
It makes it an amazing experience.

So much. It has to drag it's readers in, and keep then wanting more and more so it's that they can't stop reading. It has to be suspenseful and interesting. It can't get boring. The reader has to feel a connection to it. It has to grab your attention and hold it. It needs to have interesting characters and a unique plot.
Well, at least that's my opinion.

A book must have such realistic characters in unbelievable situations to grab me. I have to be able to relate to them. Also, I love fantasy. They thrill me.
