Currently choosing between birth control methods. Can someone give me pros/cons of Depo (the shot, once every three months)? I've had previous experience with Ortho and it was hard to be consistent. Anyone with personal experience with Depo?

I had my first shot a month ago. I read up about it a lot before hand, and there are a lot of horror stories about terrible side effects.

Some women claim they've gained ridiculous amounts of weight having been on it, but so far I've not experienced that.

As far as I can tell, it's very similar to other hormonal contraceptions. It gives me a dry mouth and a reduced libido, and this month I've also had a period, which I have never had on the pill.

After this shot runs out, I'm not getting it repeated. I think I'd rather take the tablet.

My advice is to try it. It's different for everyone, and you may find it really suits you. Worst case scenario, you have a couple of months that you feel a bit off for. It doesn't last forever

I have been on the Depo shot, and I would advise against having it. I never gain the weight but had a period that lasted over 3 months. I recently switched back to the pill. The reason I went off the pill was because I could never remember to take it. I now set an alarm clock to go off and it now reminds me to take the pill. If you do an answer search on depo, you will be able to read other people's horror stories. Good Luck!

The ONLY pro about depo is you get a shot every twelve weeks.

The cons are endless. Weight gain, loss of libido, possible risks to bone health, mood swings, etc.

I was on it and I've been off of it for 1 1/2 years (on Kariva currently) and I'm so much better without Depo provera.

depo causes bone loss... which leads to ostioperosis. If you choose Depo, take a calcium supliment every day. Other options, Nuva Ring or the patch.

i was on depo for 6 years. i loved its convenience because im forgetful. but ive been off now for 18mos because i am trying to have a baby, but no luck yet. if you plan on having children anytime soon dont get on the shot. it messes with your fertility. i was told it may be another year before i become pregnant, if at all.
