What are fossil fuels?

Please help, need answer for shcool. The question isn't what is a fossil fuel, but what kinds are there. I just want to know what a fossil fuel is.

fossil fuels are fuels such as coal, oil, natural, gas and any other hydrocarbon that was laid down and covered over at some earlier period in earths genesis.
