He would never adopt market reforms, that would give too much power to individuals.

If he did it would only be for his benefit. Lifting the embargo against a country doesn't hurt it economically it can only help. If Castro doesn't like the goods flowing in or out of the country as a result of the embargo he can simply stop the export or import of such goods going in or out of Cuba. As opposed to trying to force a country like the United States to trade with him while an embargo is enforced.

He might feel the heat to adopt reforms, but I think it would be unlikely that he would. It would probably happen after his lifetime though.

The most immediate benefit of such a move would probably be more economic prosperity for businesses and US-based Cubans who could buy and sell their goods in this new market. I think Cuban cigars, clothing, music and art would probably experience strong sales in the US, and US based electronic goods, as well as anything on wheels would experience strong sales in Cuba (bikes, motorscooters, motorcycles, cars), because Cuba's current motor vehicles are in a completely obsolete state -- they're keeping cars 30-40 years old alive by scrounging around for old parts and a dying artisan group of good mechanics who can work miracles to keep old cars still going.

Why would you want to lift the embargo against Cuba in the first place?

Not necessarily, and the embargo will never be lifted as long as that troglodyte Bush is in office. The US trades with Vietnam and China which have communist governments.
