I've began to wonder if Dirk should really be playing as Small Forward. If you remember back in the day when don nelson was his coach he used Dirk at the Small Forward Position alot. This way Josh howard can move up to the shooting guard spot. The starting lineup would look like this-
PG Devin Harris-He's Gunna have a breakout Year
SG Josh Howard- This guy Justs keeps getting better
SF Dirk Nowitzki- My fave player of all time
Pf Brandon Bass-The animal
C-Desegana Diop-A hustler and nice rebounder

He will absolutely get abused if teams set cross screens on him and he has to guard wing players

They already tried the Dirk Nowitzki SF experiment early in his career and it didn't go too well as he got into foul trouble often for repeatedly being in awkward positions due to screens

Firstly, Tim Duncan had an old David Robinson who averages like 14 ppg 7 rpg at center. So don't say Tim had David Robinson. And Manu and Parker are overated, they can however create their own shot. So can Jason Terry and Stackhouse could aswell. It's blasphemes to compare Dirk with Duncan. Duncan's the second best(behind Shaq) player of the decade. when the playoffs came Duncan really came through more then anyone except shaq during the 3peat, Iverson in 01 and Dwade in 06. Duncan had a near quadrople double in one game i think. And Tim Duncan's defense is by far better then any other power forward this decade. Dirk really isn't that good of a defender, averaging at least a block a game at starting power forward or center is (kind of) mandatory. And averaging a steal is common. Dirk's actual post defense really isn't that good. The numbers (on defense) tend to lie sometimes. I'll Give u this, Dirk's the best power forward right now. I creates more mismatches then any other player right now. But there are a lot of guys that could gaurd him. Thing is he's always defended by 6'9, 6'10 PF's and never by guys 6'11 and above like him cause they have to cover the paint. But the few times he's defended by a bigger PF, he seems to not produce quite as well. He's in not the best player in the nba I'm not a LeBron fan, but u can't honestly say Dirk's better then LeBron, kobe, healthy tracy mcgrady, prime Shaq, dwade prime Duncan, prime Garnett, prime Iverson.

Yeah like someone mentioned earlier. If Dirk were to play SF spot, he would get into foul trouble "very easy", "very early" and "very often." He would not be quick enough, as well as mobile enough to move around the quick screens that defenders would set on him.

Plus, on the other side of the ball, he would have shorter, much lighter players defending him, but those players would most likely be a lot more quicker and aigle. Thus they would defend Dirk up close when he gets the ball, and constantly put pressure on him, to force him to shot the tough shot.

Kinda like what the warriors did last year in the playoffs. What the warriors lacked in power, and height, they made up with speed and tenacity. They used undersized small fowards like harrington, and barnes to constantly put pressure on Dirk, thus making it hard for him to do much of anything other than pass, or force the shot.

Thus, Dirks best spot is the PF, since he could shot over the slower PF's and doesnt have to go to the post that much (although he is improving in that area.). Dirk creates tough matchup problems for opposing teams, because of his ability to shot the ball with a high release.

The only way you will get a 7 foot small forward is if you play the dynasty mode on NBA Live 06, 07, 08 and go all the way to the 2016 offseason and draft one.

depends on who we're playing and the matchups. but for day in day out we have too much depth at SG and not enough at PF-C to do it. plus teams like GS would tear that lineup apart. imagine that lineup against PHX. no good. however i would like to see bass get a lot of minutes this year

The thing that we should be paying attention to is how great the Mavs will be this year. We're still deep and we have an MVP and plenty of up and comers/ all-stars.
