The picture in the manual does not match what I see under my hood. I see four plugs/hoses on the side of the engine, but when I pull them off I don't see spark plugs. There is a cluster of plus on the front that seem the right size, but I can't get them off. Any help?

The plugs/hoses you pulled off the side of the engine are the spark plug wires. I hope you remember which goes where, it is very important. DO NOT unplug the other end. That would be the distributor and you will have a problem getting them back in there original position. Again very important. The spark plugs are in the cavities on the engine and they are screwed in. All you can see is the end of the plug and the insulator. You need a socket of the proper size and a ratchet wrench and possibly an extension to get them out.

To get the spark plugs off, you can use the spark plug wrench provided by BMW in the trunk tool kit.
