I think you'll find it was just "smack". The day the government outlaws parents reprimanding their children is the day the country goes to hell in a hand-cart. Oh hold, on....

Lisa: If it was banned then they wouldn't refuse to pass a law to ban it, would they...

I don't think it should be against the law to smack a misbehaving child, especially one who has put themselves in danger or done something seriously wrong.

Parents should be the ones to decide how best to punish their child; they'll know if the child responds best to grounding or if a smack is what's needed to teach them to behave (yes, some kids do require a smack because any other punishment is a laugh for them). The PC brigade demonising good parents is the reason why the streets are full of yobs with too many rights now.

Obviously, it doesn't take great genius to figure out there is a difference between smacking a child and abusing them. Punching or kicking your child is abuse as is smacking an infant. Don't confuse abuse with a smack.

Smacking (just one slap on the bottom or leg is quite sufficient) should definitely not be banned, but kicking and punching is just violent and should be. Children need to be disciplined and a smack never did me or my children any harm. If you do not like smacking another punishment is to take away a toy or stop them doing a favourite thing. When my brother was young the worst punishment for him was to be banned from watching 'Match of the Day'!

I don't think you should kick or punch your child, that's a bit extreme. But sometimes the most effective way to get them to do something (or make them not do something as would more be the case) is a smack.

Smacking is legal, punching and kicking are not. But as many 12 to 15 year olds see fit to punch and kick old pensioners, or stone people to death for kicks. I would legalise the Birch. I know a person who had it and he said nobody would have it twice. bring it back.

yes but a smack on a childs back can be good, how about on the hand when they go to reach for something hot?

A spank is not bad however a kick, punch, or smack in the face is wrong.
The one time I smacked my sister in the face was when she called me a b itch.
i raised her so ...she needs to have more respect then that. But that is only in that case never hit a child in the face...

moderate chastisement is allowed
brutalising your child is not

however some people have always done this and will continue to do so regardless of any change in the law

domestic violence is often hidden so how would the law to be enforced?

but on the other hand, will a naughty step or chair work with the out of control youth so often portrayed on our TVs or even the very badly behaved young children that can be seen weekly on 'super nanny'

They have it right. Smacking, reasonable chastisement is legal. Kicking and punching a child should rightly see you go to jail, that is just pure violence.

Lisa, and lots of others, mistakenly think smacking is banned, I don't know where this false impression came from. It is and will remain perfectly legal.

A smack or tap is fine if it prevents the child from coming to harm or danger.

Kicking or punching is definitely not okay.

I am sure they said smacking is ok under certain circumstances but did not say you can beat, punch or kick your child. They mean for parents to use their own judgement. I mean this law is not going to change anything is it. People who abuse their kids will abuse them anyway untill they are stopped as individuals. It has always been illegal to beat kids but sadly this doesn't stop child abuse.
