Yes, and there's an easy way to tell if in infact has posi-traction. Put a hydraulic floor jack under the rear end. Turn one of the rear wheels. If it's got a posi, both rear wheels will turn the same direction you're turning one of the wheels.

First they make 6 different rear ends for this car. 1. a 7.625" ring gear, 2. 8.5" ring gear, SW 3. 8.5" ring gear, Sed, Drm Rr br, 11" brake, 4. 8.5" ring gear, Sed, Drm Rr br, 9-1/2" brake, 5. 8.5" ring gear, Sed, Dsc Rr br, w/o pol option, 6. 8.5" ring gear, Sed, Dsc Rr br, w/pol option. Not only on top of that there are many ratio's.. One way to know is to jack it up and turn one wheel. The other way is to crawl up under it and TAKE A FLASH LIGHT AND WIRE BRUSH. on the front side of the housing between the center and the backing plate there will be a 3 letter code stamped into housing..like NRA..or something... (will need wire brush) This can be converted to exactly what rear end you have and what it came out of. If you need anything let me know..hope this helps...

If you believe the rearend hasn't been tampered with, you can get the 'G' code off of the RPO decal, take it to a dealer or look in a GM shop manual and decipher the code.
The RPO decal is on the trunk lid, spare tire cover or glove box of all GM cars and lists all the equipment the factory built the car with. You won't have to get under the car, jack it up or even get your hands dirty.
