It is an interesting question. On one hand, it might have made a great deal of difference had he grown up loved and cared for by someone--love after all, was his great blind spot.
But on the other hand, I don't know that Merope could have given him the love and affection he needed. She seemed as self-centered in her way as he is in his,
In one of the chats, JKR mentioned that he was real spoiled from the first, because of the way his mother bewitched Tom Riddle--that that was essentially conception by rape.
So, in the end we will never know, but I think it might have not made a difference.

I think he would have been evil anyway. Even if he'd been raised by his mom, he would have gotten the exposure to dark (or at least dark-tinged) wizarding from the Gaunts. So he probably would have still grown up with the same anger towards Tom Riddle Sr. for abandoning him and his mom, which (IMO) was the main reason for his having so much anger and resentment as a child and subsequently turning so easily to evil as an adult.

If he hadn't grown up feeling abandoned his whole life he might have turned out better but it is doubtful that he would have turned out good either. He might not have turned himself into Lord Voldemort but I don't think it was ever in his nature or genetics to be a "nice" person.

Playa C has no imagination. I'm 31 and Harry Potter is the one thing that my pre-teen son and I have that we can both enjoy.
Voldermort would probably still have turned out the way that he did. Look at Harry, both his parents died and for the first 12 years of his life he had no love but he over came that where as Voldermort wanted power and people to fear (not love) him.

There's no knowing. Perhaps he would not have been this evil, but he certainly wouldn't be good. His family has a dark backround, the Gaunts. Plus his father, Riddle, was a huge step back. He probably would have hated him. As Dumbledore would say (did he say this? I don't remember) You're not born bad, you're made that way as you grow up. Riddle grew up with no love, no friends. But he was always the kind to do things on his own anyhow, and he did enjoy power. Perhaps, perhaps not.
