that advancing technology and "globalism" will eventually result in a "one world government"? not in just a few decades, but perhaps slowly over the course of the next century or two. I'm not being a conspiracy nut, just wondering if anyone else thinks that since the world already has a single economy of sorts, that if at some point (if things continue as they are) this will likely result in some actual global unity.

Very interesting question.
Unity? maybe. One world government? Never.
Human nature will prevent this. Heck we have a hard time deciding on one party from two, so can you imagine the logistics of one government?
I hate to be a pessimist, but if there ever is a one world government, it will be more of a Nazi state, than a peaceful one. As long as there are people in power who'll sell their soul to the devil to make money and grab power at the expense of other's freedoms and human rights, the concept of a harmoniously orchestrated world government will remain the stuff of science fiction.

My friends and I were just talking about this. Our conclusion was that is might happen, but not in our lifetime. We think that there will be some sort of council that will have elected officials from different countries, and that one official will preach a world of freedom, democracy/republic, and peace. From that we would evolve into a one government world. It's pretty far fetched, but it is possible. Just not probable.

No! I don't think globalization will result in a one world government. Reason is because many countries don't support the aspect of globalization. Theorist such as yourself believe, globalization will automatically lead to more prosperity in all countries opening their borders for unconditional free trade development. Also, Anti-globalist movements pretend that globalization, as we know it today, will increase the existing problems in the lesser rich countries and that the gap between rich and poor will rather increase than decrease. Anti-globalists position themselves against a free market and in favor of a stronger grip on the international economy by governments.

The economy will become more interdependent but politically people want to govern themselves and have their own countries. Witness all the ethnic rivalries all over the world.

No matter how hard we try to achieve something of that magnitude the US AND THEM factor will always hold us back. With the diversity in just this country alone its demographics we have trouble. Individuality will be the best policy to localize what the citizens want and need. So my long winded answer is no.
