The dark is the unknown.
I, myself, like many are afraid of the dark. A lot of the time, it's the fact that you can't see what's around you, you don't know whats going on and it makes some people feel uncomfortable.

People are afraid of the unknown, just think they can't see in the dark its kinda like back in the day with whites and blacks ,whites didn't like blacks because they knew nothing about them, they were afraid of the unknown. Why does the new girl in school get picked on because they don't know that she has 8 other siblings at home who will kick their *** is they ever found out.

Their not! They are afraid of what might possibly be IN the dark.
I am 51 years old and still have to have the closet doors closed. The shades drawn. two night lights. And a bed that rests on the floor, so my feet don't dangle.

It usually comes from a terrible childhood. Not being able to trust. Insecure. Anxious. etc

From an anthropologist's perspective, it is an evolutionary defense mechanism to be afraid of the dark. Since most wild predators have an instinctual aversion to fire, it would be the sapiens whom stayed near the fire whom survived and bred back in the caveman days. Children who strayed into the darkness would get picked off.

When it's dark it's often quiet so people tend to notice things. Also you notice slight movement that you normally would not notice. I think people are afraid of the unknown, because they rely so much on their eyes, when they can't see the feel helpless. Also you are often so tired by the time it's dark you start to get emotional, and paranoid.

It is a primeval reaction to losing one of your five senses or having it impaired. Fear of the unknown kicks in on instinct - brain is saying cannot see anything - proceed with caution.

Imagine if you could flick a light switch or just because the sun set you couldn't feel with your finger tips as well or not at all, or you instantly couldn't smell or hear or taste.....

Children are especially afraid of the dark because they are defenseless and are not used to losing one of their senses.

It's the fear of the unknown. People have been known to make up stories about the dark, most of them frightening, to feed off of this FEAR.
