I have a Toshiba and I've never had any real problems with it. My brother has had 2 Dells and both of them broke very fast, so I dont think Dell is really all that great.

Whatever you can afford. Many may say Dell. But, Lenovo (IBM China) still probably good. Asus makes some good ones. Toshiba seems to be liked by some people, I have a friend loves her's.
What you should consider is what you want to do with it. Games, Internet? Do you need wireless? How much RAM will it take? Today 2 GB of RAM is almost a norm as if it have Vista it need 1 GB for that. Also, there many now come with Linux installed and that an option, if, a person tried of the Microbutt game.
The Apple computers mentioned are good too. But, if you a gamer consider the availability of games as with Linux. Linux can run many Microsoft games and programs using "Wine", but, not sure what. Many play "WOW" on Linux.

In terms of build quality and specs, the thinkpad line from lenovo is probably the best offered in the market. Apple's pro lines are alright, but apple's put out a lot of heat due to their think profile, so forget about using them on your lap if you're a guy.

In my opinion, the best laptop is a Toshiba Satellite M65-S9092. I have one, and I love it. I would highly recommend it.
