You can legislate to prevent or punish overt racism in many areas, but there's no way you can really change what a person feels about other races.

I do believe it can be solved, but only if the government takes a back seat. This is an issue about and between people and the government has done enough damage to that already. The media is another source of aggravation for these type of issues. I do feel that the goodness sin most people heart will win out over racism in the long run. If our media and our government spent more time promoting what we have in common rather then to point out our differences and spread hatred then we would have a batter chance at over coming these issues.

Yes but the laws have to work both ways and fairly. Racial Incitement should carry severe policies and Nazi based Organisations or Black Supremacy Organisations where incitement to violence is the norm; must be outlawed in all civilised countries. Racial abuse in writing, on the Internet or elsewhere must be a crime punishable by a prison sentence if repeated more than once (the first incurring a heavy fine) Schools should be accountable for permitting it in classrooms and play areas. From the word go we must jump on racists from the youngest to the eldest. We must use our laws to educate people in the evil and foul smelling thing that racism is! Sorry for the lecture but I am very committed to combating this nastiness.

Wonderful question and some great, intuitive answers.
I don't think it is a problem that can be solved, though certainly helped, by the government. But that is not what you ask.
I don't know where you are from, you don't mention what nation in "nationally solved", but it is a world wide problem. It is a constant problem in the middle east where since the keeping of history, race wars are common. Ethnic cleansing (one race trying to exterminate another race) is constant in numerous African nations, Hitler is famous for attempts to exterminate several races. Europe (france made international news not too long ago w/ race riots from teenagers wanting jobs and educational opportunities) is very intolerant of ethnic groups from northern africa and the middle east. In the USA, we have made lots of progress, but I now see what is called "reverse discrimination", where a huge sector of the black population is very discriminatory against hispanics and whites. Of, course, people fear what they don't understand and few people understand other races. I've seen it in church, in the work place (really bad between hispanics and blacks, in houston, for instance).
I don't know that without an intervention of a Higher Power, there is a lot that can be done, except to not tolerate it from your family and friends and promote understanding in your immediate environment.
Don't tolerate the intolerant, let them stew in their own evil juices, the rest of us can move on happily.

No. It would, if could, be on an individual basis. With the Jena 6, even getting the nation's attention to that still didn't correct any problems. It seem to Fire more. the nooses in the colleges, the lesson @ the elementary school.
The civil rights act of 1964 was done nationally but that's 43 years ago and we're still having to deal with civil rights violations.

In addition to the good points made above, racism isn't just a national issue, it's an international one. There will always be a These that don't like Those.

I really don't think so, because even those who say they aren't somewhere deep down inside there is just a little bit of racist thoughts. The person might not even be aware of it but they are there.Which dosent make them bad people because it come from ever breed of human being. Its not just the white people aginst the black, or the brown. Its all of us. If you say your not your a liar. No matter what you do to end it we are not all alike and there are just some people that don't like that. I see it every day.

No, but it can be improved. I don't think it'll ever be solved just because it's always been going on. We judge people who are different than ourselves, it's human nature. I don't care if you are black, white or polka dotted, there is always some sort of stereotype that will come up, there is racisms on all sides though, not just the whites judging others.

No. You can not stop people from thinking bad thoughts because someone is the opposit race, wears the wrong clothes, doesn't hang out with the right crowd. Its like the rediculous concept of "hate crimes" only having to do with race or sexuality... All crimes are hate crimes, a poor guy hates a rich guy so he robs him, a woman hates a cheating boyfriend so she kills him, a person hates their house so they burn it down, ect...

Solved by what? Laws?
The simple answer is there is no solution other than time. It's a simple fact of the human condition. Once everyone is the same color, and has the same culture, then there will be nothing to be racist about. That won't happen in our lifetime.
