Apparently, I need to point out that my friend was being sarcastic when he said Billy Joel. Some people are hopeless.

Billy Joel isn't even remotely punk. He's a real tin pan alley type smoothey.
Iggy Pop, the Ramones are all pretty well sung.
Link Wray comes to mind as a guitar influence (Link who? Guitarists will know)...
Lou Reed of course.
Wendy Williams (not Wendy Carlos Williams)...
