Yellow pages or newspaper.

In the last 20 years, or so, I have relied, mostly on word-of-mouth referrals for most of the work requiring contractors. I depend on positive AND negative information. I will tend to, at least, call someone who has done satisfactory work for someone I know, or even for a "friend of a friend." I will usually heed the warnings of someone who has had a bad experience with a contractor.

If such referrals are not available for a specific type of contractor, my next source is usually the local yelow pages. If there is time, I may check out the Better Business website for any information they might offer, but I don't usually dig much deeper than that.
