Well in the 7th book we learned that he did try to find all three Hallows. That's what He worked on with Grindelwald. But, like he explains to Harry in book seven, he became soo obsessed with becoming the master of death that he didn't pay enough attention to his family. And his obsession eventually led to the murder of his sister. He was destroyed by her death, not knowing if he had done it, and felt so guilty that he knew he didn't deserve to possess the Hallows. I totally agree with you, he definately deserved to live and do more great things for the wizarding world. But he was such a great wizard that he realized he wasn't destined to be the master of the hallows, and that Harry was truly the master. He put Harry and the wizarding world before his own life.

Well, as we learned in Snape's memories, once Dumbledore found the ring, he immediately put it on and got cursed. I suspect that after that he realized:

1. He really knew then that he could not be trusted with the Hallows.
2. He really had now more pressing things to do than experiment with the Hallows. He was dying, he had to make sure that the fight against Voldemort would not falter with his dead, which meant preparing Harry and Snape for their roles, making sure that Malfoy did not injure his soul by killing Dumbledore, nor get killed by Voldemort for not having carried out his mission; and likely other things of which we know not.

It had to be Harry who could kill Voldemort - that much had been assured since Voldemort had chosen to act on the prophecy.

The best Dumbledore could do was ensure that Harry followed through the quest for the Deathly Hallows (unguided - else the quest would prove meaningless).

In reality Dumbledore gives you the answer himself. In the final chapter during the scene at the train station. Dumbledore tells Harry that the cloak did not work properly for him, nor did the stone. The reason being that he felt he was not worthy to unite the hallows. He goes on to explain that Harry is worthy to do so because he wasn't looking to use them for his personal gain. In fact he wasn't looking for them at all.

Well that's the summary of that part of the chapter anyway.

A few good answers so far. I just had a random thought. Remember how Harry got the Philosopher's (Sorcerer's) Stone out of the Mirroe of Erised? He wanted the stone, but didn't want to use it. Maybe something like that applied to the Hallow's as well.

I think he knew his time was coming to an end and forces were working against him. I believe he had the cloak and give it to harry. Anyone can correct me, but, I'm not sure. I don't think Sirius had it, but, I could be wrong. *GOOD GOD, this is hurting my brain*. I think he knew, in his heart, that harry had to be the one. He had to prepare him. It was not going to be Dumbledore that defeated Voldemort. Dumbledore's true job was to keep him at bay until Harry was ready. That's just my take. i can be wrong and I'll be more than happy to eat crow if I am.

He was guilty. He felt that he had destroyed his family, he thought that he had possibly murdered his sister, his best friend had turned evil. He realized during that time, after he killed Ariana, that he wasn't suited for power like that. I mean, honestly, he had a lot of power. But being in a powerful position goes to your head sometimes, as it did for Fudge. Sure, he wanted to find that Hallows, he wanted to have them, but felt that it was safer for him and everyone else that he stayed Headmaster at Hogwarts. So he had a little power, but not enough to go power crazy.

He realized when his sister died he was weak when it comes to having such power. He didn't trust himself to not become corrupted by it. And was afraid he may turn evil it he had it.
